Counting Visual Groups
When we see pictures of objects arranged in two groups, we count each group separately and then add the totals together. This bridges concrete (visual) understanding to abstract (symbolic) arithmetic.
For example, if you see 3 cats in one group and 4 cats in another, count each group: "1, 2, 3" and "1, 2, 3, 4," then combine: 3 + 4 = 7 cats total.
