Linear Inequalities

Introduction

Inequalities are used to describe ranges of values rather than a single exact answer. They're essential for optimization problems, constraints in engineering, and even everyday decisions like budgeting.

Inequality Symbols and Meaning

The four inequality symbols are: < (less than), > (greater than), ≤ (less than or equal to), and ≥ (greater than or equal to). When graphing on a number line: open circles for strict inequalities (<, >), closed circles for "or equal to" (≤, ≥).

Critical rule: When you multiply or divide both sides of an inequality by a NEGATIVE number, you must FLIP the inequality sign!

Key Terms Glossary

Inequality
A mathematical statement comparing two expressions using <, >, ≤, or ≥.
Interval Notation
A way to express a range of values using parentheses (exclusive) and brackets (inclusive).
